British Colonial

Born from the late 1800’s when the British globe-trotters moved to Africa, India, Asia and the Caribbean and adapted their refined style to include their finds from exotic locations, taking materials and inspiration from their surroundings. High ceilings adorned with oversized fans, wood or stone floors, off white walls, large windows often with natural wood surrounds and shutters either painted or left in their natural wood finish become features. Dark furniture with a formal edge contrasts with solid or off white upholstery and bamboo, wicker and rattan feature throughout. Prints consist of royal blue and white botanicals, paisleys or animal prints in light weight cottons or linens, exotic green palms help to soften this look and rugs can be found in jute, sisal or seagrass. Accessorise with books topped with candles, tortoise art, hurricane lamps, seashells, maps and telescopes creating a travel-inspired aesthetic.
