Bedside Table Must-Haves

As an interior stylist on the Surf Coast, I can tell you that choosing the right bedside table might seem like a simple task, but there are a few things to consider before you go selecting a piece for your room. Below are three key factors that I consider when selecting and styling bedside tables for my clients:

Height – The height of your bedside table in relation to your mattress is crucial. You don’t want to be straining to reach for your lamp or your book when you're sitting in bed. A bedside table that’s too tall or too short can disrupt the flow of the space, so I always recommend finding one that sits comfortably next to the bed, making everyday tasks easy and accessible.

Storage – For a master bedroom or any room you use frequently, storage is a must. I always suggest considering how much storage you really need. A two-drawer bedside table is a fantastic choice if you need plenty of space to store essentials, while a one-drawer option with an open shelf is perfect if you prefer a more minimal look but still want some functionality. If you're styling a guest room, a bedside without storage can make a bold design statement and keep the space feeling light and airy.

Colour and Finish – Take a step back and assess the colours and finishes in your room. Look at your bed frame, artwork, window treatments, and even the decorative pieces you’ve chosen. You want your bedside table to complement the existing palette and materials in your room. Ideally, the finish or colour you select should tie in with other elements in your home, creating a cohesive, well-balanced look.

I’ve compiled three main bedroom, guest bedroom and kids bedroom options to get your search started.

1. Osaka Bedside Table, $149.99, Mocka. 2. Majorca Bedside Table, $199.99, Mocha. 3. Naomi Oak Viola Bedside Table, $1049.00, Fleur Studios.

Designer Tip!

When choosing a bedside table, it's essential to consider the size of your table lamp to ensure the surface is large enough to accommodate it comfortably.

Additionally, take note of the placement of power outlets. Tables or stools with open backs may expose the outlets, which can detract from the overall aesthetic of the room. In these instances opt for designs that help maintain a clean and polished look by concealing these elements.
